Percy Lockyer was murdered on January 14, 1898. That afternoon, Percy was playing in a yard with a friend named Willie Addison. Not long after, Samuel Henderson, a neighborhood schoolboy, coaxed Percy and Willie into an area known as Glackin’s Woods. Willie returned later, alone. That evening, Percy's family began to worry. His father Frederick, who was nursing a leg injury, sent others out to search and then called the police. After a young woman named Bridget Foley told police she saw Henderson with Percy and Willie, police began questioning Henderson. Henderson flatly denied being with the children, but his hesitations made both the officer and the Lockyers suspicious. That night, in the frigid weather, neighbors and police scoured the woods with lanterns, looking for any trace of Percy. But they found nothing. At dawn they tried again, bringing Willie along and asking if he could retrace their steps. As the morning search continued, a sergeant discovered a small coat and hat, wedged in the fork of a tree. They were recognizable as Percy’s, but Percy himself was still nowhere to be found. On the morning of January 16, 1898, two patrolling officers spotted a scrap of plaid cloth floating in the water. As they reached in, they found Percy's body face-down in about 14 inches of water. His arms were extended outward. Stones had been deliberately placed to weigh Percy down: one on his hip, another on the back of his head. Percy had a tightly knotted red handkerchief around his neck. His torso, face, and hands showed cuts and bruises. There were also two stab wounds: one in his shoulder, and another beneath his fifth left rib that pierced his left lung. An autopsy concluded that Percy had died by drowning. As investigators pressed Henderson, his story began to come apart. He shifted from denying any involvement, to saying he was present but that Percy accidentally fell from a tree, to claiming they were simply playing while he sharpened a stick. Eventually, Henderson admitted to putting Percy's body in the stream, mutilating it to prevent recognition, and weighing it down with stones. He told police that Percy had called him names, and he

He told police that Percy had called him names, and he "got even" with him. The discovery sent wires crackling. Newspapers and wire services ran headlines like: “Boy Murderer’s Victim Thrown into a Creek.” Henderson went to trial a few months later. Finding twelve impartial jurors proved difficult because almost everyone had heard of “the boy murderer.” The defense called Dr. Martin W. Barr to testify. Barr concluded that Henderson suffered from what was then termed “congenital moral weakness,” suggesting he acted impulsively and with limited moral culpability. The jury turned down charges of first-degree murder and outright insanity. In April 1898, Henderson was convicted of second-degree murder. In June 1898, Henderson was sentenced to twenty years in state prison, later specified as Eastern State Penitentiary. Henderson had carried out the murder on his 15th birthday. Percy was 5 years old. #truecrime #truecrimetok #murdervictim #percylockyer #childvictim
