Alex :
Most everyone just plays the monk class as a punch guy and ignores the monastic aspect. That is good and fine but the class is still inherently built on orientalist Asian stereotypes. Ki points, monastic traditions and the "way of" naming convention tie the monk class to stereotypes when the way people want to play the class is completely divorced from the concept. An official reflavor is overdue

I’m just saying, making Monks Wrestlers, like pro-wrestlers, is really fun. Like, a gulid of wrestler seeking to bulid their fame for a shot at being the top guy. Hell, Dragonhide belt, is a monk item. MAKE IT A CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE!

I once play a Half-Drow Shadow Monk who was trained as an assassin and weapon for his mother in Menzoberranzan, and I in not monk like at all and if anything I imagined him more like John Wick fighting style wise.

I made my DND monk based on Buffy the vampire slayer. her monastatic training is her ancestral training through her maternal line. their "monastery" is around these ancient trees that came from seeds of a tree of life.

TOTALLY! 2nd ed did it right. Fighter, mage, thief, cleric. That’s it. Then the combo classes, paladin/ranger/bard. Monk is just a fighter subclass. Sorcerer is just a wizard subclass. The new design is off the rails, it makes no sense

I've been an active player since 3.5 ... and almost no group I've ever played with has assumed that "Monk" meant Eastern style martial arts. In multiple groups it's always just been the class that let's you Punch as a weapon, with whatever made up belief system or power source the player roleplayed.

I mean I feel like it’s more like Chinese monk is just most popular like ppl think of first bc of pop culture and stuff but there’s plenty other cultures who have monks and monasteries I always just saw monks and wise disciplined fighters they live to train and get that inner peace or whatever and what better place to sit and train and get education and meditate then a monastery 😂

"One of these things is not like the other." Because along with assuming the Monk is Chinese-based, we assume the fantasy world is European-based. That's on you, buddy. You can make either whatever you want.

I mean yeah, but like also druid is a Celtic thing, walock/sorcerer/wizard are basically all historically synonyms, witch technically is gender neutral, but isn't technically a title seemingly. I do agree monk does feel out of place though, it's hard to argue otherwise, but I've never seen the class titles as necessarily in-universe descriptions either. For me in my setting I made "monk" a fighting style the orcs specialized in, but ethnically I based my orcs on Native Americans so like idk is it weird yeah, but like idk is it that deep? Probably not.

I see both ends but I definitely think the monk class should be a master of the spirit and body. Every culture has a different form of life energy and how they workout and perform martial arts. Additionally though most DMs and players are smart enough to adjust to the settling they’re in.

You can make Western Monasteries that teach hand to hand combat. You can be inspired by other cultures without it being derivative. Having the options to be able to DO that is all flavor and free. Fighters don't have to be Armored Knights, despite a lot of D&D focusing on that. I think it's a bit weirder to try and anglicize the one not anglicized thing than to ADD MORE non-anglicized things.

I know it's taboo to bring it up, but this is why I like PF2e so much. Monks aren't inherently pushed into that camp and can absolutely fit into any hand-to-hand combat culture. Make their group a famous gym where people just get so buff and good at fighting they shape adventuring.

Pathfinder gave us the Brawler, which dealt with a lot of this thematically, but though I love the monk as a class, I have struggled to put them in my games. They end up becoming acrobats or some such like. Had a juggler big bad for a while who was just a few towns ahead of my traveling theatre troup PCs.

I always put the monk class as the unarmed combat so often I let players rename ki points. someone played a surfer bro in way of mercy, and his ki was known as cowabunga points. like I think the class just needs renamed, and more in line with the pugilist vibe since alot of people really prefer pugilist over monk

I’ve never played a monk as a monk, Buddhist coded or otherwise, not even as a martial artist. I played once as a Harper spy trained to be ready with or without weapons and armor and once as a masked wrestler, El Guapo. X)

This is a big issue with classes that are very specific niches. Like Druid is a historic celtic priest. ect. That is why I prefer classes as a kind of archetype like Fighter, Rogue, Magic User and maybe Cleric if you divide arcane/divine magic. Then have either subclasses or rp decide what a magic using character is.

i would much prefer monks be renamed to martial artist and the subclasses be different types of martial arts. some based on movement, others aggression, others grappling

The best monk was the 4e monk. They took the orientalist overtones out and replaced that flavor with psionics. They changed basically nothing else and it worked so much better.

when i was first getting into DnD, my previous knowledge of monks was just the guys that work in churches and monasteries in europe with the brown robes, speaking latin and writing copies ot the Bible, and I played a monk as if it was one of those.
