@asta.darling: I hate ranting but for some reason, one of my old get ready with me videos from last year started trending again and the comments are pretty despicable. I will block you for body shaming and I have no problem doing it. Women of all shapes and sizes have always existed and just because you haven’t seen it doesn’t mean they weren’t there.

wasn't it thought a curvy woman meant healthy and wealth because they could afford to eat

We also see sampling bias, when items that survived previous periods were worn rarely or not sold at all because larger sizes were in more demand. Many of the surviving items are not representative of what most people wore

larger clothing can be tailored down and is less likely to be preserved. it was given a second life a third life on different people but if it was so tiny no one else could wear it it was preserved

shows that genetics play a big part. they didn't have all the junk food, fast food and a lot of baked goods. plus they had to work a lot just to eat. I inherited my dad genes. my mom was slender.

Wouldn’t the world be boring if we all looked the same, have the same height, weight, shape? Our world is beautiful because of its diversity ✨

You have no idea (actually, I think you do) how many people I encounter in my profession that do not understand this huge myth of history.

Clothing of these periods were NOT disposable like now. Most people had a very small selection of clothing which was generally passed down. Larger garments were often repurposed, either altered to fit the new owner or - as they had more fabric - used to make new garments.

If they had money for pictures, they had money for food.
Photos used to be extremely expensive and quite rare!
Nowadays, every second person is overweight, especially among the lower and middle classes. That’s where today’s problem lies.
Back then, it was only the wealthy who were overweight.

Dresses were also custom made at a dressmaker. The 21st century could never without it costing a gazillion dollars. Thanks fast fashion!

Would it be common for old clothing in these eras to be repurposed, as well? Like taken in for a slightly smaller person or workable material used to make children's clothing? or would that have been something seen more in the working class?

I've never heard anyone make this claim. Does anyone know what she's reacting to? I've certainly heard people note that there more obesity than there used to be, but I've never heard anyone say that fat people are a brand new thing.

Why don’t we have MORE vintage and antique clothing? Because before department stores and fast fashion a lot of clothing got taken apart and reused. A big reason the smaller sizes exist is because they don’t provide enough fabric to reuse. Not because everyone was “thinner”.

I also think maybe some of there children or descendents wud flip the dress you know to make it fit them. So the dress might have fit a larger person before but was taken in to fit a smaller person cause clothing was expensive and it would make more sense to recycle especially since there was more fabric to work with.
