FYI just to ruin y'all's day/night. 1. Stoick could have lived. When Hiccup said "Dad, stop!" it was because he had practiced with Toothless for years to the point he could calculate, to the second, when Toothless would fire. Hiccup could have dodged and Stoick could have helped subdue Toothless or Drago. Stoick knew this. He'd seen it thousands of times. However, he couldn't take the chance. What if Hiccup miscalculated or slipped or some other incalculable variable came along? He'd JUST gotten Valka back. JUST danced and made dinner with his family for the first time in 20 years. He couldn't lose his world so soon after getting his universe back. He jumped because he knew, in his heart, that he would rather die saving his son than grieve him with Valka. 2. Stoick spent the rest of his life trying to make it up to Hiccup for saying he wasn't his son after the fact. This was probably the moment he thought he did it. Hope y'all enjoyed that.
