ABANDONED WW2 BUNKER - DOVER 📍Langdon Hole (Dumpy B) - Dover A deep-level world war 2 air raid shelter carved directly into the white cliffs of Dover. The Langdon Hole bunker, also known as Dumpy B, is a secret World War II underground communications hub carved into the chalk cliffs near Dover Castle. Built in 1942: The bunker was constructed during the height of World War II in late 1942. The "Dumpy" Codename: It served as a joint operations headquarters and wireless outstation, linked directly to the main Dover Castle underground command center (known as the Dumpy level tunnels). Because of this connection, it was nicknamed "Dumpy B," while its sister station at Long Hill was called "Dumpy A". Unusual Rail System: An unconventional feature of the bunker's surviving western entrance is an embedded set of metal rails. Workers used these tracks to haul heavy communication equipment and generators in and out of the deep chalk tunnels. Heavy-Duty Ventilation: Because the early wireless and computing equipment generated massive amounts of heat inside the enclosed chalk space, the bunker required a specialized, heavy-duty positive air pressure ventilation system to keep the rooms cool. Vaulted Steel Structure: The tunnels mimic the design of coastal artillery deep shelters of the era. They feature vaulted steel sheeting supported by curved steel ribs (colliery hoops). Hidden Layout: The underground complex consists of a pair of parallel main tunnels—one used for the wireless operations and the other for personnel accommodation—with smaller spur tunnels branching off for power generation. #abandoned #hiddengems #ww2history #urbex #dover
