My biggest piece of advice is to do a ton of research about libraries and librarians in your local area if you’re not trying to move. Where I am (big city on the east coast), library jobs can be competitive but are ultimately plentiful. But I know people who loved libraries and got the degree only to realize that there weren’t jobs in their area or that the jobs where they lived paid too little to sustain them. I love being a librarian! But the debt is no joke.

yayy i got accepted to the san jose online mlis program and i start in the fall!! im currently a library aide 1 shelving books and i love it so much :) i got my bachelors in liberal studies to be an elementary teacher but i’m pivoting!! i’ll take this as my sign that i’m pursuing the right path :D

VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE: you need a masters to be a LIBRARIAN, but there are TONS of library jobs that DONT require a masters and many ALA schools offer scholarships for people already working in a library. I started as a public library associate and got a scholarship through UTK specifically for public library employees that covered abt 2/3 of my tuition!!!
