The recent incident in Nazimabad, Karachi, is not just another news story. It is a warning about the kind of society we are becoming if we continue to normalize mob mentality. According to reports, a woman and others at a music academy were surrounded, chased, and harassed by a large crowd after a group allegedly stormed the academy. Police later registered a case and launched an investigation. (The Express Tribune) What scares me the most is not only what happened, but the mindset behind it. When hundreds of people decide that they can become the judge, jury, and executioner simply because something does not match their personal beliefs, no one is safe. Today it is a music academy. Tomorrow it could be a classroom, a bookstore, an art gallery, a workplace, or even someone walking home. Pakistan cannot move forward if mobs are allowed to replace the law. No woman should have to run for her life because a crowd believes it has the right to decide how she should live. No family should fear sending their daughters to learn music, art, or any other skill. No citizen should be forced to prove their innocence before an angry crowd. The strength of Pakistan has never been intimidation. It has always been its people, its diversity, its culture, and its ability to coexist despite differences. If someone believes an activity is unlawful, there are courts, police, and legal institutions. The answer is never harassment, violence, vandalism, or chasing a terrified woman through the streets. We need to stop glorifying mobs and start defending the rule of law. We need to teach our children that disagreement is not a license for abuse, and that courage is standing up for someone’s safety even when you disagree with them. Pakistan deserves better than fear. Pakistan deserves better than crowds that believe force is stronger than law. Pakistan deserves a future where women can walk, learn, work, and live without looking over their shoulders. Silence only encourages the next mob. Speaking against violence is not taking sides—it is standing on the side of humanity.
