Something else to remember about hooks is there's 2 different styles! There's Boye hooks(like the ones that come in this kit. I'm sure they aren't boye brand but they're the same style) and then there's Susan Bates hooks. If you're struggling bc you keep dropping stitches or are having difficulties actually pulling through the loops, try a different hook style!
