Me if I were a therapist: "block him"

Okay so how would you respond appropriately? I feel like I would rather a therapist help me reframe than just be like "ooo yeah i understand that is hard" like yeah okay great what do I do now? I don't think this was that bad. I would want a therapist to do this with me.

IF i were to use CBT here, i would try and use it to focus on client’s anxiety about the potential of being single or being broken up with

Lauren | Lifestyle + Therapist :
Reframing is not always the answer! It can be incredibly invalidating sometimes and makes clients feel like they are “doing something wrong” just by thinking or feeling a certain way.

Do this same scenario but with a therapist response that you believe is the right way

I know someone in CBT for insomnia and the therapist is gaslighting her telling her insomnia isn’t real and is all about how she frames it…

None of her feelings or thoughts were “irrational” , they were valid. I think there needed to be way more validating before fact checking.

CBT doesn’t work for so many people and scenarios. It feels dismissive and invalidating when your thought patterns and reactions are based on reality and real world experiences.

Her anxiety/fears are not cognitive thinking errors hence CBT is not applicable.

The situation depends on the model you use. This would not be the best model to use in the instance.

Would it be best to taken an emotions focused approach first then maybe followed with Socratic questioning after depending on the clients current emotional state. The therapist took a forward approach which came off invalidating. Loved this role play btw!!

AAAAAH I cringed so hard I definitely would never do this as a CBT therapist 😐 ‘let’s unpack what’s been happening your relationship outside of this’ would be my next step

This is often the type of CBT therapist I have clients come to me from. It’s so disappointing & I often have to work with clients to unlearn learned invalidation.

I’ve had a lot people recently describe their therapists as mechanical and just “telling them what to think/say/do”, and I’m like oh no, that’s not how that’s supposed to work at all.

told a cbt therapist i was afraid my pto would be denied and I'd get in trouble for taking time off at an unconvenient. she went on a long rant about catastrophizing. then asked if my pto had ever been denied before. she was shocked when I said yes and explained I had to go to HR for accommodations because my boss was so unsupportive and inflexible about doctor's appointments. I didnt go back after that.

My first thought is to instead acknowledge those worries and further the convo by saying something like “at the beginning you told me you were freaking out tell me more about what that emotional experience is like for you”. See where skills can be useful to aid in reducing that current negative emotions 🥰

My therapist would just tell me about her life and her mistakes and how she overcame them and that didn’t help at all
