TAILLESS PUMAAAA ALERT 🚨🐆😱🇨🇷 Just a few days ago, we set off on a new expedition deep in the Talamanca Mountain Range, Costa Rica. Huge thanks to @cloudbridge_nature_reserve for welcoming us so warmly into their stunning reserve, and for letting us enjoy a solid night of sleep before the big climb! ⛰️ This time, I was joined by @benjaminlwild, with the goal of deploying two new camera traps for @lasoncas. We also took the opportunity to check on several other cameras already in place and managed by Ben. That’s when something truly unexpected appeared on the footage. A puma (Puma concolor) with no tail, captured on multiple occasions! As incredible as it may seem, it appears to be a natural malformation, most likely present from birth. These cases are exceptionally rare, and identifying him as a healthy adult male makes the sighting all the more remarkable! 😱 But that wasn’t the only surprise. One of the cameras also recorded the presence of an Neotropical river otter (Lontra longicaudis), right at the top of the mountain, far from any river or aquatic habitat. How it reached such an altitude remains a mystery! 🦦 One of the clips (the puma walking past a large rock) was captured thanks to a camera trap installed by @onehealthcostarica, as part of their dedicated project on small wild cats. And to crown it all, Ben’s DSLR camera trap also delivered beautifully.
