I honestly think that eccentricity and whimsy are pillars of British culture and we put on the veneer of respectability to protect the childlike silliness we hold in our hearts. we do need to ease up on the suspicion of "outsiders" though cos that's the root cause of racism

I would argue that the conker tournament that happens in Peckham is another folk celebration, it’s incredibly recent in its invention (2017) but the game itself is mega old and the whole thing just works as a British/English folk thing!

My village in Warwickshire does a wheel barrow race every summer 😅 it’s amazing cuz people dress up in costumes and push each other around in wheel barrows. It’s kinda like a pub crawl as all the checkpoints in the race are pubs and you have to down a pint in each one 🙃

My boyfriend used to do a woozel hunt over Christmas with his dad, and he’d dress up as a little monster who ate all the mince pies and hide around the village for the kids to catch

The Knaresborough bed race happened yesterday. Teams run pushing beds with child on through the town (which is tough because it is very hilly) and at the finish line you run through the river

Ottery St Mary in Devon has the Tar Barrels which I think happens around November time. It involves people running with flaming barrels on their backs through the village. I think it dates back to the 17th century? The city of Chester holds Mid Summer and Winter Watch parades every year, which originally dated back to around the 1400s and were revived in the 80s.
