The original word was spelled Aluminum. the extra i was added later to try to bring the spelling in line with previously existing elements.

Actually it is opossum because possum is a totally different animal. The Virginia opossum is America's only marsupial while the possum is overseas and there are over 200 kinds.

most words are Latin, also the American English pronunciation for aluminum is correct, it used to be "alumium" but the fit closer with other spellings of metals it was changed, but never changed over seas (whole story out there of why) also the American opossum is different than the possum, you don't say the O, opossum comes from a pawhatan native American word meaning "white dog or dog like beast" also corps is from the French word "corpus" meaning body, American English is a mixture of many different languages, it's all borrowed
