Michael Phelps had multiple genetic advantages that allowed him to be as dominant as he was. No one's yelling for him to return his medals.

The sport issue is rooted in misogyny. It assumes biomen are automatically better athletes than men.

The fact that the month you are born in has a non-zero impact on your success in certain sports (hockey is the most well known example) is insan

We’ve completely lost the entire point of youth sports which is to teach children how win and lose with grace and humility. To teach them how to work together as a group/team. To learn how to love a sport for the sport, not just because we win. To show compassion to an opponent Everything has become about winning at all costs. Now as you get into high level college, Olympic, or professional sports, winning does become more important, but it’s not the only thing and we need to stop treating it like that.

By this logic, we should just abolish women’s sports and have them compete with men?😂

as someone who is naturally unathletic but had to suffer through sports in gym class for 12 years, the idea that sports suddenly need to be “fair” to the athletic cis girls who have always had an unfair advantage over the rest of us makes me genuinely kinda mad

We know why - it’s prejudice and sexism

But that’s literally the whole point of a sport.. you compete against people who are better/worse than you.

The rich kids I played with had private coaches and went to the best overnight summer camps. My mother made sure I had the best cleats she could afford. Little bit of a difference.

This is especially true because women can have varying levels of testosterone. There are literally women with higher testosterone levels than some men. It’s really not an issue.

The difference between men and women is a lot more than the difference between men and men and women and women, I’m not sure why this is so hard to understand

Lmao if we want sports to be “fair” then break up every sport by weight class to start, and even then it still won’t be “fair”. You can get nearly infinitely granular in picking out different attributes in an effort to make things “fair”

Yes it is the number 1. It is going to be the biggest factor. Which is the reason women’s spots exist. We also separate by age in school. Why? To give people opportunities to play.

Nobody said anything is going to be completely fair across the board. But men playing against women is WILDLY unfair and always has been. 🙄

So you would agree then that we don’t need to have separate leagues for men and women anymore? One league for one sport. No more different rules or subsidizing leagues. Best of the best play and that’s it.

Michael Phelps was literally born to swim, he has numerous biological advantages over everyone he’s ever raced against. But he still trains hard and, keyword, *tries* to improve instead of resting on his laurels effectively

this is why it is important to consider equity vs equality. just because you have two people who identify as male does not mean that it would be a fair competition between them (equality). we would need to consider build and physique to keep it fair (equity). leaving out any training and abilities.

What is fair? let's let high school boys play against the women's national soccer team and see what the result is.

amazing to me that sport has been perpetually evolving in the interest of fairness, why do ppl all a sudden think this fairness issue is impossible to solve??!! I have faith in our capacity to allow anyone to play and have it be as fair as it can be.
