In folklore, white ducks symbolize emotional clarity, harmony, and a grounded life. I love them because they are the classic farm duck, a little bit silly and sweet, and full of character. Ducks love to swim, and they calmly paddle through water, almost gliding across it. Water is linked to emotions and instinct, so I love the way ducks move in it smoothly and with beautiful grace. Ducks are also very protective mothers! Their ducklings are bright yellow and fluffy. This sweet mother and duckling pair swim through a serene pond surrounded by ferns. The ferns are from my garden, and I start this piece by arranging them on clay that I have rolled out flat. I press the leaves into the clay leaving beautiful imprints. Once the clay leaf dish has firmed up a bit, I create the little duck sculptures out of the same clay and join them to the dish. Then I slowly dry the piece. Ceramic clay generally needs to dry slowly and evenly in order to maintain the integrity of the piece without cracking. Once dry, I fire the piece in my kiln to a low temperature (around 1945 degrees F). This preliminary firing (called the bisque firing) hardens the clay so that it can be handled. Then I apply the colors and glaze, followed by a second and higher temperature firing (this one is over 2200 F! ). Then I apply the gold accents by hand (it's real gold) and I fire the piece again, this time much lower - around 1300F just enough to melt and bond the gold. I hope you enjoyed seeing these moments in the process of creating this ceramic dish!
