@lucienrdson: Meeting an indigenous shaman in the Amazon jungle 🍃👁️🧙♀️ Among the Yagua, an indigenous community of the Peruvian Amazon region, shamanism — referred to as "nowónu" — is much more than a set of rituals. It is a way of life, structuring their relationship with the world, spirits and nature. "Nowónu" is neither strictly benevolent nor inherently malevolent: it is ambivalent, reflecting the dual nature of the forces it mobilizes. The shaman, called "némara" or "rimara", acts as an intermediary between the visible and invisible realms. Women can also hold this role, under the titles "nëmaratónda" or "rimaratónda". The journey begins with initiation: a "pándra", a young apprentice, embarks on a long training process, notably marked by the ritual use of ayahuasca . This plant, regarded as a master teacher by indigenous communities, is said — according to their stories — to open access to hidden knowledge, transmitted by the spirits of the plants and the forest. During our conversation, this shaman shared with me his visionary experience under ayahuasca. "Nowónu", at the crossroads of cosmology, medicine, and the sacred, remains today one of the pillars of Yagua community and spiritual life.
