when my dog was a puppy I'd yake him for walks in thunderstorms & fireworks night(s), he sleeps through thunderstorms and I take him to firework displays. he's not bothered.

Dogs don’t generalise like that. The only thing that can increase fear is the experience. Giving them support won’t reinforce the emotion. Not offering support is not going to create the safe attachment needed to change emotion. In the moment the fear has already been expressed so it’s too late to counter condition and desenstise. This needs to happen gradually over time.

My dog loses every bit of her mind before a storm even sheds one drop of rain. She is hiding her face somewhere, shaking and panting. I agree- mine gets no coddling from me but she is my weather radar- I know a real storm before it’s even cloudy over my home. We have not figured out how to help her

First she needs to go to her neighborhood Facebook group and tell the thunder to not do that because it scares her dog.

I try and take walks when the thunder is far away but mine is still shaking the whole time and won’t take treats

We did all those things when our dog was a young and he’s still petrified of storms and fireworks. We played his favorite games, went for walks and gave him his favorite bone.

I have a blind dog that’s NOT afraid of fireworks because I didn’t baby her. We played fetch instead.

incorrect. we had a great dane when I was growing up that hated thunder no matter what. every dog is different in this instance.

another reason to carry rewards at all times when you've got a puppy. Thunder=treats tossed so instead of being scared they are looking for food.

Once a dog is gun shy it’s hard as the devil to get it out of them. I agree you have to be proactive. Furthermore, it’s not hard to make any dog gun shy if you sneak up and fire a blast right behind them.

When my dogs were young I would ignore thunderstorms or take them to the door and act happy with the storm. Never had a problem and they sleep through thunder.

When my dogs were tiny pups i would go out on porch every storm holding them and solfly say wind and blow air, thunder boom and just relax and watch it, now at 2yrs they dont even acknowledge or notice storms, sirens, etc. So happy we did this.

My dogs have always reacted according to how I react to thunder and other loud noises. I just don’t make a big deal about it and neither do they.
