@___allaboutme___: I was in Grade 3 when he left us. I was in the middle of a test when my teacher suddenly told me “Your mamu is here to take you.” I was so excited thinking I’d be going home early. I packed my bag with a big smile not knowing that this day would mark the beginning of my worst nightmare. When I reached home the atmosphere was heavy. My Amma was crying uncontrollably and my Baba was lying still on the bed wrapped in a white kaffan. I was too young to understand what was happening. I sat beside him gently held his hand it felt soft and cold as if all the bones had melted away. Everyone around me was crying but I sat there confused just trying to understand what was going on. The last image I have of him is in the coffin the dola where he lay peacefully in his kaffan. A white chador was placed between us, and when they removed it he was gone. Gone so far that no matter how loudly I cried he couldn’t come back. My heart still remembers that scream the one that never reached him. From that moment on my Amma became everything both mother and father. She stood tall in the face of pain and carried the weight of our world on her shoulders. Even with limited resources she fulfilled our wishes sometimes sacrificing her own needs even her medicine money just to see us smile. Her strength is unmatched and I love her with all my heart. But no matter how strong she is or how much love she gives no one can ever fill the space left by a father.
