'toe the line' in my day always seemed to mean trying to push boundaries. like wanting to break authoritative rule/parent rules.

that's interesting, I always saw "toe the line" as conforming to expectations just barely or in a risky manner. almost as a synonym for "dancing on the edge of a knife".

axt to grind doesn't imply "hidden", you can have a very open axe to grind

"axe to grind" is a grudge with I'll intent. ulterior motives alone, like con-artistry, aren't personal. the symbolism in this phrase is that the person is so angry, he will take time and effort to sharpen his axe before using it in vengeance.

For the people saying English speakers don't use these... They're all pretty common? The only one I haven't heard for a good while is long in the tooth, and the only one I have NEVER heard is cheek by jowl. The rest are pretty well known?
