Might be a good idea to cut out twice as many, and glue them together 2 at a time for more durability. And use wire hangers instead of dowels, that way you can end them in loops with needle nose pliers. Though to make the supports even more durable, I'd double up on them, put them together, put a dowel between them, and wrap them with a lower gauge wire. That way you can have your shelf hold heavier things.
