@heyimhershy: it’s never too late to learn, especially with the internet and AI at your disposal!! #secondlanguage #bilingual #aapi #tamil #heyimhershy #newseries
My brother and I were made fun of when we tried to speak Tamil at home, by our parents and relatives. My mom would actively cringe so we just… gave up. Luckily my wife (who is also tamil) helped make a safe space for practicing and now I’m fluent for the first time

ah I fear it's forever lost for me. my parents were born in the UK and they can't speak their parents' language fluently because when they were growing up, they were actively discouraged from speaking it because it wasn't European.

My parents were the complete opposite, we’re Goan and speak Konkani. My parents ONLY spoke Konkani when they didn’t want us to know what they were saying. And all of my family back home spoke to us in English.. I wish I knew Konkani.

It was so baffling to me growing up that they were Indian parents who would make fun of their kids or didn't want their kids to learn their native language. Like what even is that. My parents were the other side of it where we were expected to speak Kannada at home

I can speak urdu pretty fluently but my mothers Mother tounge is punjabi, I can barely speak punjabi. For some reason its something to be Proud of, because only being able to speak urdu is "modern"?? I hate That erasing language and culture has been so normalised as a result of colonialism.
