@ssecc: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport- REDs is a multi-faceted and complex syndrome with Low Energy Availability at it’s core ❌⚡️ It heavily affects endurance athletes and can have many different symptoms including 🪫 Decreases in energy metabolism 🩸 Reduced reproductive function 🦴 Impaired bone health 🧠 Mental health issues 💪🏻 Impaired skeletal muscle function 🫀 Decreased cardiovascular and haematological health All together these can individually and synergistically lead to reduced well-being, increased injury risk and decreased performance 👎🏻 We know that Low Energy Availability leads to REDs, but what leads to Low Energy Availability?! 🤔 A holistic approach to athlete wellbeing thinks it could be LOADS of factors and I’m doing a research project into exactly what this looks like and can mean for runners. I’ll be studying endurance runners with history of bone stress injuries to get more insight about how we can put into place things that will PROTECT athletes from developing low energy availability and subsequently REDs. If you think this might sound like you (an endurance runner with history of bone stress injury), check out the link in my bio to see if you could be eligible for the study 🔥 And if you’re interested in seeing how it goes, the conclusion and the final paper follow me for updates and insights 🤓 If you are concerned about your own health or want more info on REDs- check out @ PROJECT REDS for loads of great stuff The paper I refer to is found here: DOI: [10.1007/s40279-024-02108-y](https://doi.org/10.1007/s40279-024-02108-y) #nutrition #REDs #Science #research #marathontraining #runner

Dr. Marjan🇶🇦 :
I’m a 38-year-old woman. Over the past year, even though my calories have been around 1200–1300, my weight has gone from 48 kg to 53 kg. My height is 160 cm. I have severe swelling, especially in my face, arms, and abdomen. Whenever I try to increase my activity level or exercise, my body goes into a very strange state: I start shaking, I lose my balance, I get brain fog, the swelling gets worse, I develop intense headaches and dizziness, and I get muscle pain. I’m forced to eat up to around 2000 calories for several days just to feel better again. Today, I’m exactly in that state again — my body has completely crashed. I feel extremely weak, I can’t even get out of bed, and I’m basically forced to eat just to get my energy back so I can go to work. I also skip meals very often.
