I'll forever be indebted to the avant-garde film director and writer, Maya Deren — one of the most influential movie directors of all time. This year's Sight and Sound Best Movies List included films by eleven female directors, including this pioneer of film form and philosophy. Her films share images of the human body in movement and look to represent images of the unconscious mind. And her body of work relentlessly pushes the boundaries of the film medium, defying narrative expectations set out by business interests in Hollywood. In MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON, she used subjective camera work and elliptical editing to represent a dreamlike atmosphere. And in AT LAND and A STUDY IN CHOREOGRAPHY FOR CAMERA, she effortlessly allowed actors to move through different locations with fluid camerawork and match edits. Her films have become so iconic that homages and reflections of her films can be found in music videos, commercials, and art house cinema.
