You don’t have to do this thing, you just have to do something. I don’t care what it is, just pick something you want to learn or that you want to get good at.

As a former D1 athlete, I can say honestly that the most “toxic” parents are ones that did not have an athletic “career” of their own. I’m in it now for support my kids. I even have my younger 2 with different programs bc they are not the same level and shouldn’t be forced into somewhere they are not comfortable playing in that environment. Does it suck driving to different locations? Sometimes, but what’s worse is forcing kids to unreachable goals set by unathletic parents. I match their energy for their sports. It’s youth sports, have fun, build friendships, learn a lifestyle of moving a being active. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

I’ve been battling my son’s father for a few years now about baseball. Our aon says he wants a play but throws a fir when it’s time for practice or games. Our son says he wants to play but his attitude says otherwise. I think our son continues to play so as not to upset his dad.

This is why I tell my kids all the time that we will only continue with an activity as long as they are enjoying it. If my kids comes to me and tells me they legitimately aren't enjoying something anymore than we stop doing it. The only exception is if they are on a team. They have to finish their commitment to that team for the season and then they can quit.

We tell my kids all the time they don’t have to continue in any sport/activity, but you will finish the season you committed to AND you will work hard at something, so if this sport/activity isn’t it, great, but pick your hard. Hard work is required, what you work hard at is up for discussion.

That’s because in the 90s when you didn’t like hockey anymore, your parents had not invested $100,000 into hotels and club fees uniforms eating out airfare, etc. you were just playing recreation ball. I don’t think the parents are living vicariously for the most part through their kids. I think that parents are feeling the pressure that they have to put their kids in club sports to keep up with the Joneses. Club sports used to be just for the elite athletes like AAU but now there are 10 levels of a club team from “Gold” down to “Goldfish” and lots of money to be made so yeah I think it’s a little tough after they played a lot of years to let go of that investment not because they’re living vicariously through their child but that was a huge investment to let go.

My daughter is allowed to "quit" but, once the season starts you must finish. You don't have to do it again the following year. But, with the amount of money that goes into getting her into these sports or activities, she cannot just quit mid season.

I forced my son into anything because he was becoming a hermit due to video games. I'd let him quit stuff but he needed to remain in ONE thing. he landed in tennis and loved it
