As Map Men point out, the only want to know how to accurately pronounce UK is to live here for 30 years 😂 But the reason is because literacy amongst everyone is relatively new 😂 The place names pronunciation changed over the centuries, but the written version never did cos on a few people ever knew how to read and right.

because the French Normans conquered us and became the ruling class. the English poor class didn't speak Norman french and couldn't read or write so they spoke the names as they heard them. It's very easy to look up
