Welsh place name: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. I couldn’t pronounce that if my life depended on it and I had a year to study it

Most English people can't pronounce these either. They really should be pronounced how they're spelt

people are lazy with language. say the word a couple times quickly and you'll naturally find yourself dropping parts of it. now imagine that process constantly over 1000 years.

🥰 Don't blame me Cait, it's the posh, upper-class types that make up these names 😉😂😂

As Map Men point out, the only want to know how to accurately pronounce UK is to live here for 30 years 😂 But the reason is because literacy amongst everyone is relatively new 😂 The place names pronunciation changed over the centuries, but the written version never did cos on a few people ever knew how to read and right.

English is 4 languages in a trenchcoat which is valid considering we were invaded by the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, and Normans and then went on to rummage through the rest 😂

not all British places names come from English. there's influence from all the people who settled/invaded/conquered these islands.

because the French Normans conquered us and became the ruling class. the English poor class didn't speak Norman french and couldn't read or write so they spoke the names as they heard them. It's very easy to look up
