This isnt what we are taught, maybe different schools of thought, however, its said that some Jews would greet Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), with "As-Samu 'Alaikum" which translates to "Death be upon you", The Prophet, however, would respond with "Wa Alaikum" meaning "And upon you". If you know for certain someone has greeted you correctly then you greet them the same or better.
