@choiceaustralia: CHOICE stands by its rigorous, independent sunscreen testing, conducted under the guidance of industry experts in specialised, accredited laboratories. All 16 sunscreens that didn’t meet their claims were tested to a 10-person panel, in accordance with the Australian/New Zealand Sunscreen Standard. As Australia’s leading consumer advocacy organisation, CHOICE has been testing products for decades, and we take our commitment to independence and scientific rigour extremely seriously. Sunscreens are a vital tool in the fight against skin cancer and sun damage. Millions of Australians rely on SPF ratings to understand the protection they're paying for, and expect these ratings to be as accurate as possible. We believe these findings and the potential public health implications warrants further investigation by the TGA through a compliance review by independently testing the mean SPF of, at least, the sunscreens that failed our commissioned tests. It’s probably time to just issue the apology for the botched testing and move on. It’s gonna get litigious now.

CHOICE provides a service to anyone that’s interested in weighing the pros and cons of a product. That has always been their intent. There is no obligation whatsoever on your part to act on that information. Just like you would read through product reviews when making a purchase such as a car or a washing machine. You’d want to make an informed decision based on facts and supported data. There is no right or wrong choice - it’s a decision every individual is entitled to make with the available information they have at the time. As the saying goes: “Each to their own”. Whether one chooses to act upon the lab results or not that’s entirely at their discretion and risk. It’s no different to that of a parent, or a financial advisor, or a lawyer offering you guidance on a particular situation in life, ultimately you decide what you want to take out of it. Likewise if these lab results don’t align with your experience that’s ok, doesn’t make it less credible or “tainted”. If you found the data helpful and it’s going to assist in your future purchase then this research was worth it. At the end of the day if you found this lab test valuable run with it and if you didn’t then move on to something that you can find joy in 😊 …. just saying

I expect that Choice did something wrong in its process, either with decanting or shipping. There are so many users saying they use this product with no issues so it must have a decent SPF. Time for Choice to teat it properly using other samples and no decanting. I would have my lawyers ready if I was Ultra Violet.

Choice isn’t telling ultra violent they are wrong, but the companies who have tested the products to meet the standards. And that’s crazy, that they are so confident they did this well enough to challenge the other laboratories

An amber tinted glass container is absolutely appropriate for decanting prior to testing ALL products in a blind manner without brand bias. The Zinc in Ultra Violette might have clumped as the formula did not have silicones or coating agent to stabilise it inside the packaging. Also, the formula may have become unstable after transportation or storage in different temperatures in store or retailer warehouse - when Ultra Violette likely tested theirs straight from the factory, lab or their office which would have been temperature controlled to some extent.

Why did you choose to do ‘blind’ testing when sending the samples to a credited lab? It’s not like the results are swayed by consumer bias in a lab setting. It’s just opened you up to criticism.

Time to start writing your apology letters. If your results were correct I’d have been burnt to a crisp multiple times over the last few years. I stand with Ultra Violette and their quality products!

What makes you think you are better at administering testing than the TGA? especially in such a complicated area? I think it was a foolish choice for you to expand into pharmaceuticals and you may have done harm to both the brands involved and trust in sunscreens generally
