@official_history_daily: On Saturday, November 1, 1969, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Nigerian army and leader of the secessionist Republic of Biafra and Commander-in-Chief of its armed forces delivered a stirring speech before the Biafran Consultative Assembly in Akokwa. The address, broadcast over Biafran radio, came at a desperate time. Surrounded by Federal Nigerian forces, and with starvation and disease devastating the population, Ojukwu sought to rally the nation for what would become its final stand. Just two months later, in January 1970, Ojukwu fled into exile. His deputy, Major General Philip Effiong, Lieutenant Colonel in the Nigerian Army would formally surrender to the Federal Government, bringing the brutal 30-month Nigerian Civil War to an end.
