@geobeckly: How a fault created this hot spring on Vancouver Island 🌊🌲 I recently visited the west coast of Vancouver Island and took a Hot Springs Tour with Ahous Adventures , an eco-cultural adventure guide company owned and operated by the Ahousaht Nation. They invite visitors to explore Ahousaht terriories and learn about their Indigenous culture, language, history, and storytelling. Each tour with Ahous Adventures is unique, with each guide having their own personal relationship to their cultural knowledge and the land. On our boat ride over to hot springs cove, our guide shared his knowledge about the wildlife we spotted, including eagles, sea lions, and seals! 🦭 🦅 If you’re ever planning a trip to Tofino or nearby, schedule a tour with Ahous Adventures! It was definitely one of my favorite memories from my trip. ❤️ Additional geology facts that didn't make the video: - The water is heated underground to ~109° Celsius (228° F), and when it reaches the surface it's about 50° C (122° F) until it gets cooled down a bit - This part of Vancouver Island has LOTS of faults because of it's chaotic tectonic history of multiple terranes (different 'chunks' of Earth's crust) 'smashing' into the North American plate over the past 100 million years or so - Because of the fault, the water seeps down between the cracks of the rock VERY far down where it gets heated, when normally groundwater wouldn't go that deep. - At some point the water reaches a point in the fault where the pressure pushes it back up to the surface along the fault surface, usually a lot quicker than the time it took for the water to percolate down that far - It can take hundreds or thousands of years for the water to reach this depth before getting pushed back up - The rocks themselves are mostly volcanic rocks, from volcanoes that went extinct millions of years ago before becoming part of what is now Vancouver Island #geology #vancouverisland #tofinobc #tofino #vanislebc #geologist #hotsprings #pnw

This is so cool! Is there potential for hydrogeothermal usage of the aquifee in the region? I sadly am not familliar with the place.

Back in the late 80's/early 90's, as a deckhand, I'd get "stuck" there. This was before it was a tourist trap. The boardwalk had hundreds of fishing boat names carved in them, and there used to be an old iron clawed bathtub on top of the rocks (a pipe ran water to it to keep it filled) so you could overlook the ocean. I had the springs to myself many times...I miss those days.

Is this how they’re all created? My parents took me Hot Springs Arkansas when I was a child. Water was hot. Well to me. I was a child.
