@marine.bio.john: After lots of blood, sweat, and some tears, I’m super proud to announce that I’m no longer just a TikTok shark scientist, but a peer-reviewed one. I present to you all “Nursery Resource Use Dynamics in Great Hammerheads (Sphyrna mokarran) Across Ontogeny”. Link in bio #marinebiojohn #marinebiology #sharkresearch
I sent you a petition copy…. We need NOAA to recognize them as critically endangered as the IUCN does. Going out 3 miles from Miami and bringing them back like trophies is so upsetting…. 😔

I’m curios to know if hammers are impacted by capture myopathy? If so, it would be interesting to see how it may change the outcomes of both the combustion analysis done on a muscle biopsy or the plasma spun out from a blood draw? I’m sure you act quickly in the field when handling for research to minimize the amount of time you have a shark but still interested in knowing as a someone who also studies wildlfie and worries about this!

Well you just gave me some info to teach my students next week when we learn about sharks. Of course I will have to paraphrase it for 3 year olds.😆

Not saying they aren't endangered, but we've seen tons of them in Texas the last few years. I've spotted several offshore from Sabine Pass and Port Isabel. There have been more caught from galveston and south padre lately as well. I would venture to guess just from my anecdotal evidence that there are more nursery grounds toward mexico.
