My parents died in a head on crash. The funeral director was an older man and very gently suggested that we have a closed casket. Later when we were worrying about them, he took me aside and very delicately told me not to worry, that he did not think they suffered at all. His words were a blessing.

As a funeral director I never lied, I would politely explain why it wasn’t a good idea. My late husband was amazing at restoring, lying is never acceptable

Coroner here - No family needs a detailed description of what is sometimes seen. When it’s bad for us, it would be devastating for them

As a Funeral Director, honesty is the best policy for me. I have found that keeping the family informed about every aspect of their loved ones, will lighten the effect of their condition. However, grieving the lost is a separate feeling and should be addressed in a honest and comforting manner.

No. I would always want to know the truth. Not knowing and assumptions are always worse.

Absolutely not. When my daughter passed I needed all of the ugly details. I didn’t want anything held back and I needed to see all things. For me personally it helped with some answers I would have otherwise made up scenarios about in my mind for the rest of my life. I know many aren’t like this though.

My brother had to have an autopsy… funeral director very nicely suggested my brother wear a hat…. But he also always wore a hat so it suited him.

My father passed away due to an automobile accident. He was pretty much torn in half. The funeral home asked for a blanket and work gloves to hide his injuries. We said no way so they hired someone else to come help "fix" dad. He looked great and brought us peace/closure. Couldn't see any injury. It's possible if you have a good funeral home.

there would be nothing more harder to talking about the ones they have lost and it's a white lie not malicious or to hurt them

I come in gentle and listen to the story. Some families have seen their loved one going through the most confronting procedures to stay alive. One family had their dad burnt and he survived for about three weeks. What they saw, smelled and felt their dad go through while he was alive I kind of knew they’d be ok seeing him at peace without all the medical gear.

So did they lie when they said they don’t burn bodies any more? That it’s more like drying fruit. They put them in a machine that draws out the liquid and they disintegrate? (please no one else answer I wan his answer)

My grandma lost her head in a racetrack accident. My aunt insisted her head was place in a pink bag with open casket. My dad said it was horrible.

Listen, I’m already scarred for life losing two of my kids with 14 months of each other. Nothing else I could’ve seen could’ve made it worse on the PTSD. I have like an endless horror movie in my head, and unless I medicate myself to the point, I’m a walking zombie it doesn’t turn off so the answer is be honest no matter how graphic or disturbing it may be. if I can only look at the the pictures a little bit at a time it’s my right as your customer. I didn’t ask you to save my feelings or lie to me. 💔

Many times in my work I’ve had this discussion with a family. I’m honest without being too graphic. Most of the time my advice is heeded, but on occasion a family member will view and report to the rest of the family.

They did that for my mom. Truthfully I found her. She looked like she was asleep. I preferred that as my last view of her but it did mess with my head for awhile since I didn’t see her face. Just her blue feet 🥺
