Do people think harm reduction is a synonym for sobriety?

"all you're doing is materially reducing harm as your primary focus in addiction management that's not harm reduction"

when ppl get on me for drinking 3-6 Diet Cokes a day (caffeine-free, even!)... bruh do you think the diet coke is worse than 12-15 alcoholic drinks a day???? cuz I don't 🤷‍♀️

I didn't realize that was a thing, that you can always be addicted to something. that's me! I got off alcohol with food and food with coffee. ppl keep telling me it's unhealthy to drink so much coffee but I'm like it's the most healthy addiction I've had

harm reduction literally is doing the thing anyway with supervision or picking the less deadly thing, it is NOT sobriety

dude this is how i feel when people get on my ass abt vaping. it is literally a form of harm reduction for me. i would MUCH rather such on some flavored air every couple of hours than take thousands of milligrams of pills again!!!!

People demonizing harm reduction or not understanding what it is are infuriating. It’s so simple to understand but it goes right over their heads.

I know I trend towards shopping addictions, but I also like nature, so now when I feel shoppy I go for a walk and collect photos of plants/bugs/animals or pick up cool rocks!

I'm happy you found something that works for you, I'm just disappointed in how it's being marketed. Kava has been used by indigenous people of the Pacific for centuries. It's used in cultural contexts, but it's been taken from us and gentrified. Please, if you can, consider buying kava (also called awa or Ava) from Pacific-Islander owned small businesses.

It’s literally recommended to swap addictions for a new, healthier addiction (the final aim is getting a bit insane about hobbies lmao) so idk what this person is on about

I’d prefer something that actually helps with my chronic illnesses rather than makes them worse so yes I will take harm reduction!

Lol, if someone got sober by becoming a total gym rat people would call it super healthy coping mechanisms. If we can swap the addiction to something less destructive and then swap that to something constructive, it's a success

harm reduction is just as important as preventative care. both help with taking a strain off the medical system and helps people live longer more fulfilling lives. everyone deserves a chance at that.

Being born with addictive tendencies doesn’t guarantee you’ll always be addicted to something. The 12 steps have removed the obsession to drink for over 2 million alcoholics.

I was an alcoholic from 8 to 12 I completely hate beer and all alc and the addiction gene is kicking back in and it tends to run really strongly with barley malt beers and all I crave is beer constantly you know what I’ve been drinking Malta and other barley malt drinks because harm reduction do what you have to do Don’t let other people kick you down

Swapping *this* for *that*, when the *that* is actually safer than the *this, IS HARM REDUCTION

Not only is this what harm reduction literally is, it's also the best strategy for eliminating any undesired habit in general. I've struggled with nail biting my entire life and the only times I get myself off of it are when I substitute the bad habit (nail biting) for one less bad (clipping my nails too far so I cant bite) for long enough to break the cycle.
