im writing a comic series, there's no magic, the world just changes based on *everyone's* beliefs. it doesn't work like "oh, well I believe I can't die", because the only two rules of the world are 1. nobody knows how the rules work. 2. you have to believe it wholeheartedly for it to be true. and the first rule *cannot* be broken. the actual rule says "until drakes reach the sky with flapping wings, nobody and nothing will know these things."

about the last point, I agree, but in my book the characters know how to fight physically bc a) the magic powers they wield is individual and unique to the person who wields it (for example, one of the MCs controls and manipulates emotions, which is not a combat skill even tho it can be used as a supportive skill) and b) due to the limitations they can’t use the magic without getting physically tired so it’s good to know how to fight when you can’t use the power

May I get any opinions on my idea for the magic system in my story? Every being with a soul has magic to a bigger or smaller extent, including humans but it's barely noticeable. 1/?

..okay agree with everything but a story about a world where EVERYONE can bend reality and magic obeys all living creatures causing the world to overload and overlap itself from overuse of magic would be so cool to see actually

I'm working on a dragon rider story where the riders learn weapon combat so they can defend their dragon from smaller, more nimble threats while the dragons focus on bigger enemies or ground targets. And they learn hand-to-hand combat in case they end up on the ground away from their dragon.

I also love the example on point 3. because it makes the magic sound very real and attached to the story, seems natural that people will have disagreements and confusion about such a misterious power

In my book, they sparring using magic (there are differend kinds of magic, depending on their source). But what makes it interesting is that even the powerful weilder can be outwitted by someone less powerful. So, you cannot 100% rely on how powerful you are. You also need to be strategic. And my MC is an expert manipulator LOL! 😭😂

i like to think about Harry Potter for the point 3. I've read the books multiple times but i don't remember anyone ever wondering about where magic comes from. it's just a thing that exists and there are those who has magic and those who don't. i don't think it's really necessary to be explained where it comes from.

I agree with all but the last point, because it is like saying “why would you learn how to defend yourself if you have a gun or a rocket launcher?” I thought it was self explanatory that it was for the situations where you don’t have accces to the rocketlauncher. (Besides having warrior characters be physically fit makes sense) But I lived your vid!

This is a great video! I’m a dev editor and fantasy is my secondary genre, so I’ve read hundreds and edited dozens of fantasy books. The world building issues for the genre typically come down to a magic system where the reasoning for it is “…well because it is.” Instead of something well-plotted out. Same with politics. “Just because” is not a good reasoning for a society. That’s not how culture, religion, political structures, etc., develop. 🙃

my magic system is based off the human body. people have power over certain body parts and can influence others, however there are drawbacks. For example my mc can cause auditory hallucinations or take away peoples hearing but she is slowly going deaf. another character can essentially bloodbend but it causes internal bleeding

There’s also the concept of hard magic systems and soft magic systems as a writer you should look into and see what suits your narrative.

i rly like magic that is draining to use. in my book, magic can be used by half elves, but even a small spell comes with a price. it drains you of your life force, your memories, sometimes even your muscle. which is why soldiers who use a lot of magic develop muscle atrophy and dementia really early

I have a magic system based on a recessive blood type C, where User exchange the oxygen in the blood cells into energy for magic. That magic comes from aspects of their bodies like heat, blood and electricity and such. There are also obviously mutations due to the gene stuff. Cancer is more common to magic users, because magic passively increases cell production.
