@katepearlexplains: ๐ธ ICONIC ART. INVISIBLE WOMAN. Her Black British Story You've NEVER Heard! ๐คฏ You might have seen her face before. ๐ธ She's in iconic British portraits, a striking presence that captures your eye. But do you actually know who she is? ๐ค Meet Fanny Eaton: a Jamaican-born artist's model and domestic worker whose face is more famous than her name. ๐คฏ Her powerful presence is in several key pieces of Victorian art, yet her incredible Black British story remains largely untold to the public. ๐คซ Born in Jamaica in 1834, Fanny Eaton arrived in Britain by the 1840s, eventually becoming one of the most significant muses for the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and their contemporaries. ๐จโจ She graced canvases and drawings by artists like Simeon Solomon, Joanna Boyce Wells, and Rebecca Solomon, often depicted with a captivating beauty that challenged the racial aesthetics of the time. ๐ Yet, despite her undeniable visual legacy in major art collections, her own life, struggles, and contributions remained largely unrecognised until very recently. ๐ Her story is a poignant example of how Black women could be visually present in British society and culture, yet simultaneously rendered invisible in the historical narrative. ๐ญ Itโs a stark reminder that 'seeing' isn't always 'knowing'. ๐ This crucial work of bringing forgotten figures like Fanny Eaton into the light is happening right here in the UK. The 'Hidden Histories' project by The National Archives, for instance, actively works to reveal the diverse and often overlooked stories of Black people throughout British history, from medieval times through to the modern era, utilising original documents to bring these voices to the forefront. ๐ Their ongoing research, and that of many dedicated community historians, proves these women were there, contributing, inspiring, and shaping Britain. ๐ Their stories challenge the very fabric of how we understand our national narrative. โ๐พ Tell me: Had you ever heard of Fanny Eaton before today? Or which other incredible Black British woman's story do you think is too often overlooked despite her impact? Share your thoughts below! ๐๐พ๐ฌ If you're ready to discover the truly amazing, often unrecognised women who shaped Britain, and arm yourself with a fuller, more honest understanding of our history, make sure to follow @katepearlspearls for essential untold stories, mind-blowing historical insights, and a community dedicated to radical truth-telling and reclaiming our heritage! I never was interested in history when I was younger but now in my 40s I love history and learning about the past they never taught in school. I realise now why I found it boring in school

Wouldn't it be great if someone wrote a play about her life? (think Patterson Joseph- 'Sancho') It would be fabulous!
