Back in the day, we had gas station attendants who washed your windows, checked the oil, radiator, pumped the gas, etc. No credit cards then. Guess that makes me old!!

In the USA we used to pay for gas inside but too many people would drive off without paying so that led to the pay at the pump.

that what i liked about Germany they didnt have a lot of big chain stores if you want a wallet you go to the local leather guy or clothing store. same with furniture. Italy was like this also. you would get to talk to the local store owners.
