@labmuffinbeautyscience: Reposting my IG stories here because there's so much bad science flying around and I'm tired - some are based on older info and this is evolving so check the date! Also watch the first video I posted Didn't repost the ones where I argued with someone about number of subjects because she deleted her post, but 3 subjects is enough to get a ballpark estimate and going over 10 doesn't improve statistical significance Also % zinc oxide doesn't translate to SPF, that's why DIY sunscreens don't work I really don't want to freak people out but I feel bad not flagging similar formulas because a lot of you are in summer right now = anything with around 22.75% uncoated zinc oxide, also look at overlaps in other ingredients (don't throw them out, just use a different sunscreen for now - my hunch is not all batches are affected) #spftok #sunscreen #choice #ultraviolette

There’s been crazy misinformation flying around about Choice, I just had to correct somebody who said they were owned by the Daily Mail? I think a lot of people don’t realise what a reputable organisation they are.

If it was really due to decanting, that would mean the same SPF drop happens after you apply it on your face.. that’s not exactly a good defense, is it?

I don’t like how UV approached it with “Choice was wrong, we are right, and we stand by that”, rather than accept maybe their formula isn’t as stable as they’d hoped, and use it as a learning for their next product, UV flooded social media with damage control, felt weird

why would Choice magazine fake results or be accused of ill intent toward Ultra Violette? when CHOICE is a non profit whose only mission is consumer advocacy? Also if CHOICE warned Ultra Violette in March and then retested in May why didn’t Ultra Violette post their own results first, to take control of the narrative?

I saw some bad “expert” takes on this. Do you think the rising social media popularity of cosmetic chemistry has led to more people using the title “cosmetic chemist” after only completing short diplomas or online courses? I wonder if this might blur the public’s understanding of the profession and weaken its scientific credibility when the term is used so loosely, and the public’s scientific literacy often is such that they can’t tell the difference in a diploma holder vs a PhD.

Not the first time Australian spf has failed a test like this though… Bondi sands failed a test by the UKs version of choice called WHICH

The biggest issue overlooked here is storage and transportation. Brands test the product they’ve manufactured and stored according to direct. Coles, Woolworths, chemist warehouse transport and store these in roasting ambient warehouses/trucks. Stock is left in the sun at busy loading docs etc

Sunscreens that tested poorly were mineral susncreen (mainly Zinc oxide based) probably because they were decanted and zinc oxides are known to degrade quicker than others. Another thing might be because zinc oxide needs to be properly distributed in the formula medium to be effective as sunscreen, so many instruct that to shake well before using, since they have decanted it the zinc oxide might have settled or they weren’t able to mix the formula properly.

Should they be tested products that are available in stores or having been in typical conditions at different storage temperatures? That is, if temperature has destabilized the formula in some ways? Normal sunscreens we use don’t stay in aircon 24/7. Some formulators commented that their formula had no silicone or coating agent to make the zinc disperse more evenly, limit clumping. Any thoughts?

I have super fair skin, live on the North Coast and go to Bali 3 times a year and use Ultra Violette and have never had sunburn when using their products. Anecdotal, yes, but proof is literally in the lack of sun burn, blisters.

Can you please look into and possibly discuss the lab (Princeton Consumer Research Corp) UV use for their testing, the less than stellar history of its co-founder, Barrie Drewitt, and how this company seems to promise potential clients they will get them the results they want before they’ve even seen the product…? https://truthinadvertising.org/articles/princeton-consumer-research/

as long as it's SPF30 it doesn't matter. after SPF30 we should be more focused on UVA protection.

Can you suggest sunscreens that actually work and that are also safe for acne-prone skin?
