@jess_happy_smallholding: I’ve just harvested my garlic and immediately afterwards I planted the same bed up with cabbage, broccoli and kale. This is an example of succession planting.  Succession planting is where you plant a bed up with a new crop immediately after removing an old crop. Succession planting has a number of benefits. It optimises your growing space by ensuring your beds are always full, maximising the yields you get from your plot. Ensuring your beds are never empty has the added benefit of feeding the soil life with living roots and reducing weed pressure by covering the soil surface.  You can optimise your growing space further by starting seedlings off in module trays before a space opens up in the garden. I sowed these brassicas into module trays in April, at which point this bed still had garlic in it, potted them up in May and am now planting them out in June now that the bed has been vacated. By sowing my seeds earlier into module trays I have given these plants a head start, bringing my harvest forwards. By contrast, if I waited until my garlic was finished, and then sowed cabbage seeds directly into this bed, my harvest would be later.
