I had a chance meeting with Anthony Bourdain in 2012 when he was filming one of his episodes of “the layover“ and I asked him what his favorite country was because I was a big fan of his. He said “Vietnam is not bad.“ I visited Vietnam the next year and have been coming back every year and now I live in Hanoi. I owe it all to him.

Vietnam holds no hatred towards any country. Even for Americans. They just want to be able to govern their own people without having to answer to someone else. And they enjoy spreading their culture to anyone who visits and shows the world that the country can take care of themselves and will host anyone who wants to see what Vietnam is all about.

Makes me think of that beautifully scenic camera shot they filmed in the Top Gear Vietnam special after going through the Hải Vân Pass. The lone fishing boat drifting across the water. Love it!
