Social security gets notified via the death certificate filing by the hospital. the bank is being protective so aunt bessy or crazy sister doesn't come and clean out the account.

Getting my MIL’s internet and cable turned off…we sent the death certificate in and they still refused to turn it off. For all I know, it’s still on. So many phone calls!

My father died in 2020, days after lockdown started. I had to manage probate etc. My aunt died in 2023. I did everything for her too, including selling her car and trailer. It's a ride.

my heart breaks for you friend. when my mom died my sister ordered 10 copies of her death certificate which i thought was a bit much but while handling everything we had to order a few more because everyone and their grandmother wanted original copies.

OMG I’ve been handling my father in law’s estate. The amount of paperwork! Just to cash in one investment for $84 they want me to get some gold medallion stamp at a bank (not all do this), tons of paperwork, $50….it’s ridiculous!!!!!

Ran into that with my moms credit and turning off cable; literally act of god; wouldn’t accept death certificate as enough

Same with EZPass. They wanted an original death certificate and some other stuff and I was like - “ok, then keep it active and try and replenish it(back when there were monthly fees) . It won’t work. “

One of my dad's bank accounts held hostage 5 bucks. Even though I confirmed what they needed to close. Said we might go to court. He had a credit card at that bank. I told them I would drop the card of some where and someone can go spending and I wouldn't pay. I got that 5 bucks fast after that 😅

When my stepmother died two years ago, I had to help my elderly father with things trying to track down two life insurance policies that she created between 20 to 40 years ago was insane. They’ve been bought and sold by other insurance companies. We have the original copies with the numbers and everything they kept transferring us back-and-forth, making us call different numbers then we had to fax in death certificates that they never got either it took weeks. My father told me he would’ve given up if he had to navigate this by himself, I can only imagine how many elderly people might’ve missed out on money or benefits, because they couldn’t figure out the system.

Still in limbo with a credit union where my mother and I were joint owners on an account. It’s got a whopping $16 in it. They can’t get it right and can’t “find where the money went.” I don’t live in the same city so resolution will have to wait until I can go in again.

I had to send DC to my mom's bank. it was super simple and quick. they totalled out her truck payment and I got the truck. I had to sell it to pay for her funeral. didn't take but about 2 weeks. we had her cremated and it was all done.

It is such a painful process but also there has to be some protection, like the bank shouldn't close an account based on a phone call, that would be chaos. I'm surprised SS was so easy.
