I’m a doula in CA and even I had NO IDEA how different midwifery is in other states. This issue definitely needed a spotlight on it, specifically in Texas, but I agree that it’s a very nuanced issue and hospital birth≠safe

I’m a nurse and I didn’t even know there was a difference between midwives. Since watching your videos I’m so educated and strongly considering a certified nurse midwife for all of my OBGYN care!

Yessssss and there were so many parts portrayed as malpractice and that totally may have been, AND I’ve seen those things happen in hospitals with OBGYNs. So- the stories are so important, and I think there was a more responsible way to deliver the info. That being said if you aren’t familiar with the field I do get how confusing it can be!

It was a difficult listen. I felt the same. My jaw was on the floor at times and in other moments my brain was like “ok here PLEASE talk about the differences in care with CNMs” or “I’m sure they are going to talk more about how midwives positively influence outcomes in most cases”. This case is horrific and egregious and I feel deeply for the women featured in the podcast. There should be consequences for these specific midwives. I did like that they talked about how to research a provider’s experience and how to delineate among different types of providers but it was minimal. As a CNM who has worked in hospital, birth center and clinic, it does concern me that folks will get a bad taste for all midwives from the podcast.

I’m in CA and here most (if not all) CPMs are also LMs, and that licensing is through the state medical board same as doctors. I didn’t know in TX a license is not really a medical license. 😳

It’s hard being an out of hospital CNM right now in Texas. The podcast did a great job at some things and I agree what occurred was so tragic and the midwives there had a lot of fault, but you are right, not all birth centers and not all midwives are like this.

As a labor nurse who has worked in hospital and homebirth and a current student midwife—it was a rollercoaster of emotions. It helped me uncover some biases I need to work on, but at the same time I was really disappointed that the messaging seemed very you can choose OOH birth, but the hospital is safer.

I also agree I feel like it was biased, unfortunately. I also cannot imagine what these women went through, just awful. I have used midwives for both my births and using them for my 3rd birth, and even this podcast made me nervous even thinking of birthing out of hospital!

I think it's important to remember that in some states due to their licensing and education, midwifery doesn't deserve "justice". In some states, midwifery care is really not even healthcare. And it's important people be aware of that.

Origins almost killed my cousin and her baby. it was HORRIFIC to watch it happen and be hopeless. Plus how she was treated after by them. Lawyers said she has no case bc her and baby survived. Barely, but they did.

It’s frustrating, like you said, that midwifery is so poorly understood in this country. So many people don’t even understand the difference between a midwife and a doula. Things are not integrated here at ALL for out of hospital care, and unfortunately, the state that you practice in makes all the difference both for midwives’ ability to practice and also protection for moms and babies. That being said, it makes me angry that midwifery is constantly demonized when the outcomes in the hospital are largely terrible. When things go wrong there, it’s so often talked about like there was nothing else to be done. Why do OBGYNs get the benefit of the doubt when midwives are immediately held the fire? Just things to think about. I’m so so so sorry for the bad outcomes that these women experienced.
