@serenan2d2: I have some much to say about the brilliance of this series and why it can hit home especially for women. It’s such a poignant look not only at the past but the current situation for many women in the world. I’m excited to watch more! #apothecarydiaries #maomao #jinshi
it's so human. Not a try-hard girlbodd feminism or whatsoever. Just genuine exploration of women's struggles from different backgrounds.

Apothecary Diaries has such a balanced view on SW because it will simultaneously break down the conditions both the concubines and courtesans face (being essentially a legal form of slavery) yet tell their stories without trauma being sensationalized or the primary focus of the story. It’s women trying to live full lives despite their condition- which is exactly what we have always done, and will continue to do

What I love about Apothecary Diaries is how, in spite of women being trapped by circumstance and power dynamics, we see how all of these characters still find ways to exercise what little agency they have. Some of it is through establishing social connection, some through violence, some through manipulating circumstance, and in a lot of cases by reducing their perceived value to specific men. The women are pit against eachother, but we still see moments of empathy and solidarity. I also appreciate that while the visuals are not explicit, the narrative does not shy from how vile the exploitation of young girls is and how it has intergenerational consequences.
I will say that Jinshi and Maomao only work for me as a pairing because its a slow burn. A LOT has to happen for him to understand the power dynamics, for either of them to communicate, and for them to address their own personal traumas.

Yesss this analysis 🥰 two things 1) the theme of tragedy of intelligence and 2) how even intelligent women didn't understand why mao map would purposely "devalue" herself in so many ways. ahh so many things

When mao mao was explaining the conditions of the brothels and how a women must still remain chaste while also being able to ‘provide’ while also needing to b smart it just broke me cuz ur telling me these women r not only forced to b in these conditions but also expected to be absolutely

Maomao effortlessly checking Jinshis privilege every time she reminds him she's trafficked and indentured to the brothel 😆

Read the light novels too! All of the different versions of AP write the ideas but from different angles, and you get to see all the different ways Maomao interacts with these situations

and one thing we don’t discuss enough is even though there’s a romance here with jinmao it’s not a fairytale at all. jinshi is totally okay with using the advantages he has as a man and a prince with no regard to how it’s affecting maomao. the entire story is a testament to maomao’s resilience and how she balances her work, ambitions and the way that people want to use her for their own gain

I also love how while it does portray the struggles of how the society treats the women as commodities, it shows that men are just as trapped by systemic expectations. Jinshi, and the emperor and Lakan can't act freely bc of the expectations society has of them. The patriarchy hurts both men and women (obviously one more than the other) but the problem is systemic, not due to individuals

You explained it so beautifully. It’s such an emotional anime. Also how Maomao is sold just like merchandise to the palace. How she just kind of goes with the flow to survive. She’s realistic about her position and the position of the other women in her world which breaks my heart.

I love seeing how even women who act out are allowed some grace or Maomao understands why they would do what they did because they’re navigating the confines of being a woman plus the added pressure in their own way it’s so nuanced

lishu’s story absolutely broke me for some reason, all the characters and plotlines are so well written but she was the one i resonated with the most. overall apothecary diaries does such a good job at handling women’s issues and criticizing the system

I watched it with my Fiancé. I'm not sure if he liked it as much as I did, but I showed it to my little sisters. They loved it, binge watched it after school, and are going through it again.

Honestly, there’s nothing to add to your analysis. You took the words out of my mouth, its both scary, devastating and exhausting that we can draw parallels from the anime to reality. The story captures this without the need to explicitly say it (show dont tell) but it also highlights not only how stifling it is to exist as a woman but the bonds between women and their shared sisterhood (not in every case but mao mao’s relationship to her sisters and her friends is sweet)

You said it perfectly! It can be such a heavy watch as a women. I also love how they loop it all back to systemic issues instead of making individual villains. How many women are kinda stuck in their situations like caged birds. How yes Jinshi and the emperor are “decent “ men but if they want to be scummy that’s perfectly legal. How they both do harmful things because of how ignorant they are about that power dynamic. Idk I love apothecary diaries so much!

I also really appreciate that it’s based off a light novel so it’s not in the hands of an artist. As an artist I think artists are an extremely important part of the process but just because they can create good drawings doesn’t mean they can create good narratives.

I can't wait to see your take on Jinshi as a character cause like Caleb I think you'll be able to break his character and what makes himself tick and come to understand him. So far I love the way you're able to articulate these aspects of the anime.

I hope the success of Apothecary Diaries leads more people to check out historical K-dramas and C-dramas like Empress Ki, Jewel in the Crown or Stories from Yangxi Palace. Good shows and very much in the same spirit as the show.

They also captured the concept of Mothers so beautifully. Like genuinely all flavours of motherhood, bad, good and the intricate pieces of what it is to be a mother. 😭
