![What!? A woodpeckers the size of a crow!? And she ended up in our orchard nets! That’s when you know you’re having a lucky day at the banding station.🍀 Pileated Woodpeckers are incredible! They’re like little dinosaurs—and they kind of are for real. Birds branched off from dinos way back in evolutionary time 🦕 They use their massive chisel-shaped beak to hammer into decaying wood in search for bugs 🐛 They also nest in cavities in big dead trees (snags). Dead wood is important for a whole host of species. Since Pileated’s carve out their own cavities, the are considered primary cavity excavators. The holes the make are used by many other animals—from other birds to small mammals like flying squirrels 🐿️ These woodpeckers are forest birds. They need big tracts of contiguous forest to do their thing. Interestingly, we caught this girl in our orchard nets—she was mixing it up 💯 How do we know she has eggs? Brood patch! She dropped feathers on her belly to make a little hot pad to keep her eggs toasty when she incubates 🥚 Such a cool bird to have in our hands!
