After emancipation, freed slaves grew watermelons as one of their first acts of independence - it was a crop they could grow, sell, and profit from on their own land. Watermelon became a symbol of freedom, self-sufficiency, and Black entrepreneurship. Despite later being weaponized in racist stereotypes, the African American community has proudly reclaimed this fruit as part of their heritage and Juneteenth celebrations.
