The Chambered Nautilus: The Ocean’s Ancient Submarine The Nautilus is basically a living, breathing submarine. These incredible creatures have been cruising the oceans for over 500 million years—meaning they survived the extinction of the dinosaurs and actually predate trees! 🌊 While they are cephalopods (in the same family as octopuses and squid), they are totally unique. Instead of having a soft body, they live inside a beautifully patterned, coiled shell. But the inside of that shell is where the real magic happens. It’s divided into a series of separate chambers. The Nautilus lives in the outermost chamber and uses a special tube called a siphuncle to pump gas and fluid into the empty chambers behind it. This allows it to perfectly adjust its buoyancy so it can float or sink on command, exactly like a modern submarine. Unlike octopuses, they don’t have suckers. Instead, they have up to 90 highly tactile, sticky tentacles that they use to feel around in the dark and grab small fish and crabs. They also don't have lenses in their eyes—they operate like a pinhole camera, letting ocean water flow directly right inside to form an image. They spend their days hiding in the deep, dark slopes of the Indo-Pacific to avoid predators, and only migrate up toward the surface at night to hunt.
