Those who jumped overboard did not want to experience the horrors of slavery but them doing this hurt their enslavers more than they know. Enslavers saw Africans as property, something that can cost money, someone they can sell but they can’t sell them if they’re in the ocean. May those who chose the sea rest in paradise with Yaweh.

Capt.Ladybug.Lisa :
During the transatlantic slave trade, some enslaved Africans chose to jump overboard and drown rather than endure the horrors of the Middle Passage. Estimates suggest that between 10% and 20% of those transported died during the voyage. While the exact number who jumped is unknown, it was a significant enough occurrence that sharks were said to follow slave ships due to the bodies being thrown overboard, according to The New York Times.

This is why I get sad at night on cruises. Look out at night over the dark water with the moonlight and wonder what our people felt.
