BMW tech here, use 5w40. They say to use 0w20 because it keeps the EPA happy, not because it's good for the engine. Liquimoly Leichtlauf High Tech 5w40 is what you should be using. Comes in a blue jug.

mechanical engineer here, they tell you to use 0w20 because it makes the EPA happy, not because it's good for the motor. 0w20 does not provide enough lubrication to be healthy for a high performance engine.

Liqui moly 5w40 is the best for most German 6 cylinders

DO NOT USE 0w20. Causes engine damage bc it’s so thin.. USE 5w-30 OR 10w-40 NOTHING ELSE!!! And change your oil every 3-5k miles not every 10 thousand

Oils to thin I’d stick with your 5w40

5w30 is the best all round oil and reduces wear the most. It doesn’t matter that you drive lightly it’s a turbo car carrying a heavy body and it will wear out more with a thinner oil. The 0w20 is all about emissions ie fuel economy not engine longevity

5w-30 is the way to go. They say to use that for fuel efficiency. 5w40 is only needed if you modified it tbh. 5w30 is the best for stock B58.

😑 dont listen to that guy. using a heavier oil weight was used back on older cars, I forget if it was to stop or slow the oil burn or oil pushing past the rings. usually at that point the engine is cooked and will need replacing

Trevor Elam :
the jump to 0w20 by manufacturers is just to help hit emissions standards, lower viscosity = less drag on engine = better fuel economy with no work in r&d. for longevity of the engine 5w30 or 5w40 is best.

I also put 0w-20 in my x3 m40. It’s a daily driving. I don’t launch it everywhere and rarely get on it. Runs 100% fine never had any issues

So much wrong info in here. The first number is winter weight for cold temps. Second is for hot temps. If you live where it’s warm/hot most of the year go 5w30. If it’s mild/cold most of the year then stick with the 0w20. If you want the best of both go 0w30. Brand matters a ton as well. Redline, penzoil ultra platinum are top tier oils. Change every 5k no matter what

I live in europe and its strange that official BMW dealership also says here that they use 5w-40 for X3s. It really depends I guess on emission standards and etc.

you're good. 5wX0 was the standard but lots of changes to the oil lines and system were made in the newer engines. you can push it fine too. dont forget to use fcp euro for lifetime warranty (free oil changes, spark plugs, filter, etc)

yeah all the people telling you to run a heavier oil don't know anything about mechanical or chemical engineering. the thing that's actually going to impact your engine is whether you're getting a stage 3 full synthetic or a stage 5 full synthetic. stage 3 is just highly refined crude oil that meets the minimum synthetic qualifications. stage 5 is a fully synthetic oil that is not extracted from crude and actually has better protective properties. also, if you're really worried do your oil changes every 5,000 miles. it's not hard
