Were you so afraid of being rejected that you started pretending to be someone you were never meant to be? You became so concerned with how people saw you that you slowly stopped being yourself. The saddest part is that you may have convinced yourself that this was necessary. You thought that if you changed enough, people would like you, accept you, and never have a reason to leave. But somewhere along the way, you forgot that acceptance means very little if it requires you to constantly hide your true self. You were not really being accepted; people were accepting the version of you that you created for them. Maybe you weren’t afraid of losing people as much as you were afraid of discovering that they never truly wanted the real you. So you kept changing, adjusting, pretending, and sacrificing pieces of your personality just to avoid rejection. You became a stranger to yourself while trying to become someone everyone else could love. And eventually, the question becomes painful but necessary: if you have to become someone else just to be accepted, are they really accepting you at all? You shouldn’t have to destroy your identity to earn someone’s approval. The people who genuinely value you should be able to know the real person behind the mask—the imperfect, complicated, honest version of you. Because being yourself and being rejected hurts, but pretending to be someone you’re not just to be accepted can leave you feeling even more alone.
