They don’t even like us in Mexico. I will never forget how my father was denied service in Oaxaca City as a Oaxacan because of his skin color and appearance, even though he “dressed up nice” so he could HOPEFULLY be treated as a tourist.

Not trying to be ignorant but how are Mexicans “stealing” culture from other Mexican? That’s like saying black people from cali can’t do there hair like black people from New York just because they are in different parts of the country. I was born and raised for a good portion of my life in Mexico and I never heard of another Mexican viewing our cultural diversity in a way where it must be kept separate or where you must only appreciate and participate in the customs that are close to you. Like for example my grandma lived in Guanajuato and she wore tacados, faldas, huipiles, and rebozos her whole life and I’m sure she wasn’t trying to be a culture vulture. My mom also used to do my sisters braids in every way possible including traditional ways that were not from our area. I just don’t get how a Mexican can “steal” another Mexicans culture?

people arguing against mestizos is crazy to me, they were a product of interracial relationships and are just mixed people, we shouldnt be invalidating mixed people of either heritage, and not to mention as a society we should be moving past the use of terms like mestizos when they were made by colonizers to divide people into social classes forcing everyone to conform to and uphold them. "mestizos" or half spanish half native people were stripped of their native culture and i dont feel like its right to dismiss that

My whole family is from Oaxaca and I am against the gate keeping. My aunts and mom are proud that people want to braid their hair like oaxacans.

She is 100% right. This whole braid discourse was started as a political statement. There is nothing revolutionary about cultural appropriation.

There’s so many versions of braids and ways to be styled in Mexico, if you’re Mexican you’re allowed to explore your culture. SO MANY CULTURES HAVE BRAIDS. Yes I do agree certain people need to stay in there lane but stop pinning Mexicans against each other we have enough of that 😤

Literally all regions in Mexico do braids and wear ribbon. Each state also has their own indigenous clothing/prendas.
