@jonjon.jpeg: Our lawns aren’t the result of personal preference; they’re the product of zoning codes and outdated norms. They’re costly, ecologically empty, and frankly, a little boring. But they don’t have to be. We got rid of our backyard grass lawn and changed it to micro clover. Low maintenance, resilient, and good for pollinators.
But a question... What did folks have before grass lawns?

The biggest problem is some cities have ordinances that your grass can only be a certain length. When I lived in IN the city put a sign in our yard saying to mow it or be fined $250. Any ways around this?

Lawns started as a form of security. It prevented thieves from hiding in tall grasses near the home.

Unfortunately, in places like much of Texas, you can’t skip the lawn watering even with chaos gardening with natives. Clay-heavy soil has to remain as saturated as it was when a foundation is poured or the foundation will crack and sink.

In Maine my grandparents left enough mown grass around the house for kids to play, and then left more in a meadow that was mown twice a year. Meadow would have butterflies, birds, little critters—and so many beautiful grasses & wildflowers. Beyond that? Trees. ❤️
