As a landlord I'm just going to note there's an option between letting it sit empty and renting it out, which is selling it.

There is nuance in the landlord hate - so many will have multiple properties, and they will be poorly maintained by the landlord and have extortionate prices. And also expect people to not actually live in the house or create any normal wear and tear. Plus they treat the renters like children. Its a spectrum.

I think the biggest problem with landlords is a lot of them go through real estate and then the real estate don't do what is needed IE communication with the landlord when there's a problem and then that makes the landlords look bad

Yes of course people are going to exploit other people if the system is set up for that to be the best way they can “get ahead”. That doesn’t mean it’s ok or good to do it.

as a landlord hater, there’s nuance, like, if you’re a good one then all the power to you, but if you’re a dick who just purposely buys up a bunch of houses to rent them out at crazy prices and you don’t fix anything, then fuuuuuuuck you.

You're really leaning in to some pretty toxic stereotypes about tenants there. No one pours all down sinks maliciously just for funzies. But here's the thing, if you don't want to risk wear and tear or damage that you can't control then don't rent it out. You can just sell

Charging tenants market rate rent is not exploitation. It's called being in line with the market. when rents go down do you think the tenant is going to pay overs?

Feel better, my landlord locked me out and tossed everything I owned away. My rent was paid and there was no damage. She just decided she didn’t want me there anymore. 3 days I lost everything. They like to throw their weight around. Most of us are grateful to rent. Because our only option is the streets.

we love landlords like you, the ones trying to help, it’s more so the landlords that own multiple properties, never do maintenance and have done bodgy repairs that we don’t like. thank you for being accessible for people who may not have found a home.

I didn’t realise until I started renting off my parents that all the crazy irrelevant sh that happened was the real estate agents and not the land lords, they do lie and they pit tenants against landlords

there is a place for landlords because not everyone wants to own a house (forgetting for a minute the fact that those who do can't atm), and you seem to be doing it the right way. when people hoard properties in order rent them out for extortionate prices, do not care about fixing issues and don't treat their tenants like humans - that's when it becomes a problem. my mum died when I was in my early 20s, I inherited her home - fully paid off, odd position to go from renting to that. we have a fully self contained unit underneath that we could charge between $500-$600pw for but we rent it to a young guy doing his carpentry apprenticeship for $150pw inclusive of all amenities. he's wonderful, puts my bins out for me, quiet and happy - I usually forget he's there. we didn't need the money, so didn't want to charge someone an unnecessary amount for something we could use to give someone else a leg up.

Fellow landlord here. Don’t let it bother you, you’ll end up with compassion fatigue (speaking from experience)

We moved into a new rental and 4 weeks later the drains all started to back up, we had to pay for them to get fixed as the previous tenants would pour oil down the drains, the landlord and real estate said it was down to us to fix! So frustrating when we are great tenants and others spoil it for the rest of us.

obviously not all landlords are evil, same as not all renters, bad eggs on both sides.

Also, in my hometown, landlords came forward and said that people online proudly claiming what they do to rentals was a huge factor in them deciding to stop renting out their properties, no matter how long it had been a rental and turning to short stay / air bnb / hospital staff housing instead 🫨 I'm sure this has been happening forever and is rare but thanks to the internet it's right in the landlords face and they're nervous!

It's actually terrifying! Some of us wouldn't have homes if we couldn't rent and I don't want any landlord to be scared of me, I take good care of homes. If I can buy my own home and afford to rent it out I would, as that could be helpful to some and I would hate for someone to hurt my home, I would want them to love it like their own!

Good for you. Be a nice landlord, find good long term tenants. Don’t let them fuck you over and earn a bit of money girl! You are not a 70 year old grafting in money
