@thebcbabrother: Running escape extinction? Here's a crucial tip to make it more effective and less of a battle: LOWER THE RESPONSE EFFORT!" 💡 Escape extinction is powerful for reducing behaviors maintained by escape (like avoiding a task). It means that when a behavior occurs to escape, the demand or task is not removed. The individual must complete the demand. However, if the demand itself is too hard or requires too much effort, we might inadvertently make the situation even more challenging. Here's why lowering the response effort is a game-changer: * Reduces Frustration: If the demand is genuinely too difficult or physically taxing, it can lead to increased frustration and more intense escape behaviors. Making it easier, initially, can prevent this escalation. * Increases Compliance (Momentum): When the demand is low effort, the individual is more likely to engage and complete it. This builds "behavioral momentum" – successfully completing an easy task makes them more likely to complete the next (potentially harder) one. * Highlights the Contingency: By making the task easier, we ensure the escape behavior is what's not working, not the task's difficulty. The individual learns, "If I engage in escape behavior, I still have to do the task, but if I just do the task, it's actually not that hard and then I get my break/reinforcer!" * Promotes Skill Acquisition: Sometimes, escape behaviors mask a skill deficit. By lowering effort, we can bridge that gap and actually teach the skill more effectively within the extinction procedure. How to do it: * Prompt heavily: Provide immediate and effective physical or gestural prompts. * Shorten the demand: Instead of "clean your whole room," try "put one toy in the bin." * Provide highly preferred materials: Use engaging tools if possible. * Physical assistance: Offer a helping hand to make the action less strenuous. Remember, the goal isn't to make the task impossible; it's to teach that escape won't remove the demand, and that completing the demand leads to reinforcement and relief. Lowering effort makes that lesson clearer and less aversive. What are your go-to strategies for reducing effort during escape extinction? 👇🏾 👇🏾 👇🏾 #ABA #Bcba #rbt #asd

It’s so important to meet kids where they are!! I always say that if course we want to teach independent skills, it’s human to need help sometimes too.
